SOLSC '16 Day Six: Forty-nine didn't plan well

Forty-nine-year-old-me overscheduled this weekend-in-a-hotel-alone time.  It's a bad habit of mine--planning too much, not getting it all done, then feeling incompetent and unaccomplished as a result.

With two hours left before checkout, I'm taking stock of what has transpired since Friday night, and figuring out what I can get done before I leave.

I've had two nights of great sleep and a rejuvenating afternoon nap.  Took a three-mile walk in a park, in the sunshine.  My family treated me to a tasty birthday restaurant dinner last night, topped off with a cake baked by my wonderful husband.  I made two SoulCollage® cards, and popped back on Facebook for a little while to reconnect with friends and thank them for birthday greetings.  I've written two blog posts, now working on this one, left comments on others' Slicing posts, replied to comments on my page.

What's left undone?  I haven't started my fifty letters to fifty people yet.  Didn't crack a book open to read {gasp}.  Didn't do much in my self-improvement workbook.  Didn't plan out my upcoming week.  Didn't get to the two or three stores I wanted to visit.  Haven't completed the three work-related tasks that have to be done this weekend.

Good thing I've got an hour-and-a-half left here.

Good thing there's a door on my bedroom at home.

And good thing this fifty-year-old is not going to feel the least bit unaccomplished, come bedtime tonight, regardless of what's been checked off the to-do list.

  1. But did you sleep? Did you think? Did you watch some tv? Did you plan out how you'd like the next year to look---just in your mind? You did lots.

  2. I! Love! This!
    Oooohhhh, how I can relate.
I am forever overscheduling, working my tushie off, and feeling unaccomplished because I couldn't do the impossible.

...and 48 year old me is thinking that your 49 year old gift to yourself of a weekend alone sounds DIVINE!!!
My birthday is the 16th - and while I'm booked all around it, I am from this point forward DETERMINED to make a date with myself for just such a getaway!
    BRILLIANT!!!!!

    1. Krista, I am glad to know I'm not the only one who does the overscheduling thing! And yes, weekends alone are HEAVEN! This is the second time I've done it, and it is so rejuvenating. Read Anne Morrow Lindbergh's "A Gift from the Sea" for inspiration.

  3. The things you did were far more important than the things you didn't get a chance to do...there will be time for those, later.

  4. Remember your Thoreau: "Simplify, simplify...take one day as deliberately as Nature..."

Happy birthday. If I'm reading this right, you're writing letters to fifty different people to celebrate? Quite a project. Good luck!

That reminds me: I write a letter to my daughters each year on their birthdays, and I think I missed last year! Next one is coming up on March 30!

    1. Thank you for the birthday wishes! Yes, I am desperately in need of simplifying, at so many levels. And yes, I will be writing to fifty people; I did this when I turned forty (to forty folks, natch) and it was a very satisfying project. Your tradition of birthday letters sounds lovely--what a treasure you are helping them build each year!
