SOLSC '22, Day Four: Look for the helpers

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping."
--Fred Rogers

Today I noticed the helpers

The husband who washed my coffee mug

The colleague who asked how I was, and meant it

The assistant superintendent popping into our library,
working hard to get funds approved for remodeling our space

The student at the book fair, buying an intentional gift for a sibling
or a friend, or both

The long-term sub taking a day to help in the library, swiping
her debit card to cover taxes for kindergarteners and ESL students
and any student who didn't count on extra expense, grasping
their hard-earned or gifted crumpled bills in sweaty palms

The instructional coach who walked PreK students to the
book fair, and helped them shop

The assistant, reminding me to go to the bathroom while
she ran the register, straightened table displays, helped
students budget their book money

The parent support specialist and volunteers who showed up in
the late afternoon to make sure our parent shopping event
went off without a hitch

The volunteer dad who left early with his children, so he
could make his spaghetti sauce from scratch for dinner

The moms who stayed to the end, straightening up for
the students who will show up at 8am Friday to shop

The husband who saved a Round Rock Donut for his wife,
sweet indulgence to end a long day.

  1. I like how you describe everyone you encountered, helping, throughout your day. I hope your book fair went well.

  2. Such a precious list - I am going to think on this, too, make my own list of helpers. Just the focus I need!! I love that your list begins and ends with your loving husband, the coffee cup and the donut.
